This additional volume of wood mobilized is intended to supply the industries of the territory according to the best use of the harvested wood either in priority, the lumber (sawnwood), then the wood of industry (papule to paper) and finally the wood energy. The project will allow the implementation of harvesters and carriers adapted to the mechanized harvest in steep slope (synchronized winch machines: up to 70% slope). Aid is also planned:
The PyC’En Bois project meets the conditions for this “plus” wood mobilization to be done in a concerted manner, with a guarantee of sustainability in the multi-functional management of the forest. |

Mechanized operation on a steep slope:
Evaluation of the results: The machines equipped for the steep slope are efficient and well adapted to the terrain, but the size of the forest tracks is sometimes insufficient, and a minimal improvement of the service is necessary. This type of modern and computerized machines, allowing work in a cabin, without risk compared to manual work, and sheltered from the weather, can attract young people to logging. A set of 2 machines synchronized winch (feller + carrier) replaces 12 to 15 traditional loggers / longshoremen it is today very difficult to recruit for these cuts of thin coniferous thinning on steep slope. The fraction of wood energy mobilized remains modest (10% of the total harvested): the reasons were the weak demand due to the harsh winters and the valuation of these woods of 1st clearings carried out late in noble and durable uses (sawing). The wood energy market, overproduced at the national level also due to the slowdown in the creation of boilers, has called into question some investments in processing equipment that would be difficult to amortize. Owners’ animation directed towards the management of low-value land finds several difficulties:

The mechanized operation on a steep slope makes it possible to carry out the first remaining undeveloped thinnings, to generate a margin on the sale of wood for the owner and to mobilize additional ridged and sorted woods which supply the industries of the territory transformation as well as the local boiler rooms. This mechanized harvesting method should attract young people to logging jobs and ensure the growth of harvested volumes. |
