Descrição detalhada da prática ou projeto

The methodologies evaluated have been adjusted to the usual way of working in the area, without considering alternatives for the use of the machinery, contrasting the yields associated with the modality of taking out cups or of complete tree as biomass (chips) and conditions. The success of obtaining forest products, whether wood or biomass, is subject to accessibility to the stands under treatment, to the distances of take-off and unloading to which the products must be subjected and the possibilities of access to heavy machinery or transport elements of adequate dimensions. This is why there have been a series of activities complementary to the performance prior to the work, such as the scarification of the track and the pruning of feet to facilitate the access of the vehicles, the reconstruction of slopes and the correction of hours and roads of take out.

Plot 1_Baldíos: Plot with an area of 4.2 ha. The slope is between 50% and 100%. The stonyness is 30% and during the execution of the works it has been found that around 35% of the area presented abundant mud. The maximum distance to the track is 200 meters. The loading dock is at a maximum distance of 150 meters from the track. The presence of holm oaks is significant; however, the operations of attachment and cutting can be carried out without being affected. The species that has been harvested has been the pinion pine (Pinus pinea) with pyramidal crown morphology. According to the Management Project, plot 1 has the following dasometric values (shared with plot 2): 1,582 feet / ha, with 737 feet / ha with a diameter of less than 12 cm, 786 feet with a diameter between 12.5 and 22.5 cm, and 59 feet between 22.5 and 32.5 cm.

Plot 2_Baldíos: Area of 4.0 ha. The slope is between 50% and 100%. The stonyness is 30% and during the execution of the works it has been found that around 40% of the area presented abundant mud. The maximum distance to the track is 175 meters. The loading dock is at a maximum distance of 50 meters from the track. As in plot 1, the presence of holm oaks is significant; however, the operations of attachment and cutting are perfectly compatible.

Plot 3_Baldíos: Area of 3.7 ha. The slope is between 50% and 130%. The stonyness is 30% and during the execution of the works it has been found that around 40% of the area presented abundant mud. The maximum distance to the track is 80 meters. The loading dock is at a maximum distance of 1,000 meters from the track. The presence of holm oaks is significant; however, the operations of attachment and cutting can be carried out without being affected.

The development of the works in the study area have been fundamentally conditioned by the effect of the slope and the presence of water and mud on the ground, determining and conditioning the adhesion of the means involved in the extraction (disembarkation) to the areas of gathering the cut pines. In these collection areas, located along a firewall, the available space and its accessibility is sufficient for the development of the chipping, loading and transport operations of the generated product.

Descrição detalhada da prática ou projeto

The demonstration project for the use of biomass in Andalusia has developed actions on a plot of this group of mountains included in barracks D (cantons 33 and 34). The actions have been the measurement of the processes derived from the use of this forest, granted by the Ministry of Environment to a private forestry company. This use has consisted of a cut made on the mass of Pinus pinaster to make a substitution of species and a successive clearing on Pinus pinea. The work of this demonstration project in Monte Caballeras has been the monitoring, control of times and yields of the execution of the exploitation by the winning company, without affecting the organization of its work. The land where time tracking has been carried out has an area of 10.98 ha, an average slope of 45%, N-NE orientation, terraced and without significant rocky outcrops.

The data collection has been carried out from October 2010 to June 2011. On the one hand, the mass has been characterized by conducting a previous inventory, the attachment of type trees and the measurement of modular values. On the other hand, the time control of the development of the works has been carried out by continuous timing. It has also had a portable scale that has allowed the weighing of the trucks and the self-loading. The implementation of the use has been conditioned by the high slope that has limited the transit of machinery, relying on fire belts and take-off tracks.

SURVEY

• MANUAL SURVEYING

• MECHANIZED SURVEYING

HAULING

• The landing has been carried out in two phases. In the first one, the whole tree meeting was carried out on the drainage tracks by dragging through contour lines.

• Second phase of disembarkation, the double axis autoloader (VALMET 860) unsealed the timber logs and tree canopies or remains destined for biomass to a passable fire belt giving rise to differentiated batteries. The average height of the cup stack was 2.5 meters.

CHIPPER

• The chipping has been carried out during the spring with the chipper on a chassis of wheels and towed (JENZ HEM651DQ) having obtained a fairly homogeneous splinter in size, with moderate presence of whole needles and absence of whole corsages.

• The last activity of the exploitation is the loading of the trailer truck to transport the splinter from the loading dock to the consuming plant.

Highlights the lower costs of the stand where it has been possible to perform the mechanized attachment, since for the meeting and disembarkation the work of the tractors has not been necessary to be able to travel the entire work area the autoloader. During material processing there is a significant variation in moisture content. Thus, it has gone from 51% of moisture in the standing tree, to 37% of splintered feet after 5 months from the cut, to a final percentage of 29% in the splinter destined for the plant.

Descrição detalhada da prática ou projeto

ADELI is a regional association managed by representatives of forest owners, cooperatives and loggers, as well as wood consumers. The system is based on specific financial assistance negotiated with the region, which aims to encourage the grouping of harvest operations. . To carry out its actions, the ADELi relies on three salaried technicians/facilitators who intervene, both with the owners and the economic operators, to canvass other, closely located forest owners for the regroupings. They help them to define the most appropriate silvicultural interventions and complete the administrative records. Their work specifically targets thinning operations. To benefit from this activity, owners and operators must pay an annual membership fee plus an additional fee for each successfull operation.

Mobilize the untapped forest resource on steep slopes,

Develop the wood energy sector,

Mobilize for a period of three years, a volume of 50,000 m3 of additional wood in these three territories:

  • Performing silvicultural improvement work,
  • Animation of private and public owners,
  • Material investments: forest services, specific mining equipment, improvement of wood energy platforms.

Descrição detalhada da prática ou projeto

This additional volume of wood mobilized is intended to supply the industries of the territory according to the best use of the harvested wood either in priority, the lumber (sawnwood), then the wood of industry (papule to paper) and finally the wood energy.

The project will allow the implementation of harvesters and carriers adapted to the mechanized harvest in steep slope (synchronized winch machines: up to 70% slope).

Aid is also planned:

  • for silvicultural work on forest stands that have little scope for improvement. In total, the interventions will allow the re-planting of an area of approximately 1,200 ha.
  • for material investments by the partners: skidder to crane, improvement of wood-energy processing platforms, improvement of forestry services.

The PyC’En Bois project meets the conditions for this “plus” wood mobilization to be done in a concerted manner, with a guarantee of sustainability in the multi-functional management of the forest.

Mechanized operation on a steep slope:

  • 36,000 m3 of softwood of 1st thinning harvested in 2 years of which more than half in the project area,
  • 440 owners targeted by the engagement actions (communities and private),
  • 1 free syndicate of owners created.

Evaluation of the results:

The machines equipped for the steep slope are efficient and well adapted to the terrain, but the size of the forest tracks is sometimes insufficient, and a minimal improvement of the service is necessary.

This type of modern and computerized machines, allowing work in a cabin, without risk compared to manual work, and sheltered from the weather, can attract young people to logging.

A set of 2 machines synchronized winch (feller + carrier) replaces 12 to 15 traditional loggers / longshoremen it is today very difficult to recruit for these cuts of thin coniferous thinning on steep slope.

The fraction of wood energy mobilized remains modest (10% of the total harvested): the reasons were the weak demand due to the harsh winters and the valuation of these woods of 1st clearings carried out late in noble and durable uses (sawing).

The wood energy market, overproduced at the national level also due to the slowdown in the creation of boilers, has called into question some investments in processing equipment that would be difficult to amortize.

Owners’ animation directed towards the management of low-value land finds several difficulties:

  • Owners’ lack of interest due to low profitability of operations,
  • fragmentation and land complexity,
  • lack of access and difficulty in pooling small forest owners for requests for assistance to the service.

The mechanized operation on a steep slope makes it possible to carry out the first remaining undeveloped thinnings, to generate a margin on the sale of wood for the owner and to mobilize additional ridged and sorted woods which supply the industries of the territory transformation as well as the local boiler rooms.

This mechanized harvesting method should attract young people to logging jobs and ensure the growth of harvested volumes.
